Why am I more bold online than in person?

This article is about how people can be more different online than in person. It talks about online disinhibition effect. How people can either be mean or feel the need to open up more to someone online. It mentions how there is six main reasons to why people become someone different online.

My opinion on why people become different in an online setting is exactly because of online disinhibition effect. People feel more comfortable online because they don’t have to face the person face-to-face. People will open up because the feel so connected to the other person online. Or the person can become very mean and bold. We don’t have to face the consequences when being mean online. Being online makes it a lot easier to be bold and not have a care what happens. A very good example would be Facebook posts about politics. You look in the comment section of those posts and see a lot of bold people that are most likely not like that in person.

Online disinhibition effect has a lot to play in this. This whole article is talking about ODE and what comes from this. ODE is all about people not having any restraints. Which people being more bold online is exactly that.

Why do people become have different identities online than in person?

This article talks about how people can come across differently online than they are in person. We can get perceived differently and judged based off of our profiles online. This girl talked about her experience when realizing for the first time how different she looked online. She talks about what social media is to her and how she thinks it is. The author also mentions something very important. How we can look like very different people between different social medias.

My opinion on this issue of seeming like a different person on social media compared to in person is a very real thing. A lot of people will make their life look more luxurious online than it actually is. Or people will hide the issues they’re having in life and pretend everything is okay online. Sometimes people don’t even do this on purpose. Just like the author coming to realize she is so much more different online. I can say the same thing honestly. I seem like a different person looks and personality wise online.

I believe ODE does come into play with this too. With ODE people feel more comfortable doing things online that they wouldn’t do in person. So with this people feel more comfortable being someone else online. Maybe this different person online is who they want to be in real life, but are too scared to be. You can also be invisible on social media. You don’t have to put up pictures of yourself, it could be nature photography. Which to me is being a different person still online. It is still a different identity.
